NSFAS Restores Funding for 182 TUT Students - Today 12 Sept 2026
BREAKING TODAY - Saturday 12 September 2026: NSFAS has reinstated funding for 182 Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students after qualification code errors.
Department of Higher Education and Training announced today that funding is fully restored and September allowances have been paid.
What Happened?
182 TUT students were defunded under the N+ rule due to errors in qualification code updates. Cases also involved pending GAP investigations, dual registrations, and data-sharing problems between NSFAS and TUT financial aid office.
After Deputy Minister Yusuf Cassim's Helpdesk received over 300 self-reported cases from TUT students, TUT and NSFAS collaborated to fix qualification codes.
Quote from DHET today: "After receiving the file from the deputy minister’s Helpdesk, TUT and NSFAS collaborated to examine the cases, identifying and fixing the qualification codes for the 182 students. TUT has confirmed that funding is now fully restored, and allowances for September have been disbursed."
1,212 More Students Still Unpaid - URGENT
On Wednesday 9 September, Deputy Minister Yusuf Cassim visited TUT with Vice-Chancellor Prof Tinyiko Maluleke and SRC. They discovered:
- 1,212 students were placed in accredited housing AFTER NSFAS portal closure - accommodation fees still unpaid
- 115 students had NSFAS funding approved after portal closed - same issue
Cassim has written to NSFAS Board demanding urgent investigation and immediate assistance.
Funza Lushaka Update
NSFAS also paid R222.7 million to 6 universities for Funza Lushaka bursaries benefiting 2,927 teaching students. Universities: CUT, NWU, UFH, UL, UP, UNISA. More R295 million claims for 3,095 students being processed for September payment. Deadline for remaining claims is 13 September - TOMORROW.
What TUT Students Must Do Now
- Check myNSFAS portal - funding status should show "Funded"
- September allowance should reflect by Monday 15 Sept
- If you are among 1,212 accommodation cases - contact TUT Financial Aid + Deputy Minister Helpdesk immediately
- Keep proof of accredited accommodation
